You followed me again. I told you not to. You must be patient. Wait. That is the first lesson you must learn, as my apprentice. I cannot be worried about you while I indulge in my research. I must not be bothered.
Did you see it? I made a mistake. My first one. The souls of the dead were indeed much easier, but I pushed too far. The Everling woman, she had something shielding her. The feedback was incredible.
I saw Luclin in the brightness.
But yes, I have my answers. The souls of the dead are purer things. Remember that. But they are not more powerful. Disappointment on that part.
I have honed my skills beyond any channeler here on Norrath. Even Daleen.
At this point I can tell that the humanoid races are all functionally equivalent. Far more powerful than animals, but nothing that cannot be overcome. It is my duty to pursue this path as far as I can go.
The caterpillar continues its transformation. I can see the muscle, free from the confines of skin. It is pulsing with power. I can touch the exposed tissue, and it is like iron. Channeling these souls through my body must be strengthening it. The process is strange though, like it is happening to a body that isn't mine. The flesh from my leg is sloughing similar to my arm. It should hurt, but instead I feel nothing. Isn't that odd? Soon it will be as strong as this arm.

What now, you ask? You should know. As my apprentice you need to think about these things. I am disappointed that you have to ask. I expect more from you. But I will tell you anyway. Having mastered the humanoid spirit, what comes next?
The dragon comes next.
I will need a frightening amount of mana to accomplish this, however. That is a problem that I must solve first. I am not sure where the answer lies yet, but I'm sure the dragons have secrets that they haven't shared with us.

This should be an excellent opportunity to break you into your new role as Assistant Cryptkeeper. Filthy mortals have defiled the Plaguebringer's unholy sanctum and left quite the mess. It is my divine duty to oversee the restoration of the temple, and thus you will be performing the following tasks:
Disgusting carrion feeders have been ingesting the pieces of Bertoxxulous' slain avatar, and have filled the main hall with their... excrement. Take the shovel from within this coffin and use it to remove the waste. Try not to get any on you; it contains potent pathogens, and we wouldn't want you contracting an incurable disease during your first day on the job.
2) Your second, and most sacred, duty is to recover the essence of the avatar. As it has been consumed by the crawlers, you'll need to recover it from within their gut. Luckily I have devised a plan that doesn't involve you feeding them scraps and then following them around with a burlap bag at the ready. I'm sure you remember your apprenticeship in embalming? I've left a kit in the coffin for you; as you no doubt remember, you need only take hold of the kit and use it in close proximity to your target, and the fluids will do the rest. You'll need to inject them multiple times in quick succession - this will cause the critter to explode, releasing the coveted protoplasm.
3) Your final task will be to collect the remains of the bone Amalgamations from His most-pestilent altar room. The foolish adventurers cracked their bones, exposing the blighted marrow within. We will recover these and use them to propagate a whole host of new golems. Some more talk in the market today. Merchants are starting to demand higher prices. They claim the crops are even thinner this season and that at least twenty percent of all the harvest is being stored away, by royal decree, in case the rains hold out even longer. This seemed to have brought fear into people's eyes, but I find it reassuring. Our King and Queen, long may they reign, are doing what they must to protect us all. We will ride out this harsh season and find delight and ease on the other side. May the Mother of All bless us.
A royal decree was read out by the criers today. They're asking us to conserve and ration even more! There's talk of starvation from those who have been on the edge of the forest, in Tak'Xiz. I am not sure what to make of it, but I thank Tunare for the wisdom of King and Queen Tak'Yaliz and their advisors. They've been redirecting the aqueducts and watering channels to feed more of the local farmlands. The outer lands may be wilting, but the heart of the Elddar Empire is strong.
More refugees arrive every day, it seems. So many of them, thin and weak, especially the elders and the wee ones. It's been difficult here, but when I see the pain and hunger etched on their faces, I am both ashamed and relieved. Relieved to have not suffered as they have and ashamed to have not realized how terrible it had become for those living in the outer cities and villages.
Seems the Burning Prince is not the only god with aims to see us suffering. The Plaguebringer has added several curses to our continuing woes. Disease is flourishing and death is becoming more commonplace. Often the death is the result of the ailing body either by disease or starvation, but there are growing numbers of deaths where an act of violence is to blame. A mother desperate to relieve her children's suffering; a hopeless man killing another to steal his cheese and bread. How quickly our world has turned dark under the blinding rays of the relentless sun!
I'm beginning to feel this little journal of mine may well serve as a record of our empire's decline. I pray to The Mother, I am wrong. I should have left with so many others when they sailed to unknown lands. The perils of the unknown would hold more hope, more promise than remaining here has. All life and joy are slowly being bled from the city, day after day.
All citizens of Takish'Hiz, no matter age or state of health, have been conscripted by the King and Queen into work forces, so intent are they on saving the city, saving their throne.
I have been put to work helping Priests of Growth. It gave my day some purpose, I admit, but it has not provided me distraction from our dire situation. They have been performing rites and rituals over the struggling farmlands in attempts to keep Takish'Hiz fed and their own power from waning, yet... I can see the diminished yield. They are wringing the soil of its last remnants of nourishment, resulting in pitiful and short-lived crops.
The defense projects intended to keep the encroaching desert sands at bay have all proven temporary at best, or equally destructive at worst. A section of the elaborate walls erected by our mighty geomancers caved in the other day. It fell into an underground cavity and took a section of the city with it. Done in by the sheer weight of the stone and the sand piling against it, to Elder Geomancer Caedor's dismay.
The day has come, unthinkable as it was just a few seasons ago; the King and Queen had the great horn blown, and their standards removed from the royal residence. The city is too far gone and cannot be saved, but it cannot be abandoned either. My position as aid to the Priests of Growth provided me with an intimate view of the considerations made and debates had on the subject.
There are many an enemy who could live well in the desert and would find prestige and arcane wealth within our abandoned capitol. As a result, the geomancers have been charged with sealing the city under stone and erecting guardians. The druids are to salt the land, and the priests are erecting arcane defenses.
Those who were healthy and capable of travel left the scorched lands this morning, with their Royal Highnesses. They are sailing across the Ocean of Tears to a new and fertile land, leaving behind the rest of us in Takish'Hiz to carry out our tasks, and be sealed inside. There are more of us than I would have liked to see left behind, including Elder Geomancer Caedor. He volunteered to stay behind within the sealed city, some suspect as penance for the collapse after having convinced King and Queen Tak'Yaliz of its guaranteed success.
Years ago, as he was rising through the ranks of the advisors to the new King and Queen, some had warned of his hunger for power, so his act of sacrifice must have come as both a surprise and a relief to the other royal advisors.
With the King and Queen gone, Caedor is now the highest-ranking official within Takish'Hiz. He's rallied us to do what we were tasked to do for the good of our kin, living or dead, for as long as we can. He was motivating, I must admit.
It's been months... years? I had lost myself for a time. I forgot all about this journal. It's difficult to explain all that's transpired since my last entry, even to myself. Details slip and memories seem to be shifting somehow. Forgive my confusion... I am trying to write down as much as possible before it is all gone, again. Before I am gone again.
Caedor began studying heretical magics. Or had he secretly been doing so for years? I recall rumors claiming he had begun building living creatures from sand, while others claimed he was magically transforming creatures into sand and rock. Lord Caedor had set his mind to forcing open the spring to the Plane of Growth. Was I called to consult for this? Had I been brought before him due to my work with the Priests of Growth? It wouldn't work. His temper flared. Statues crumbled.
No, wait... Was it an act of pity? Had this been to ease our pain? We had been buried and faced a lack of food and water; our bodies left to crumble like the stone around us. He and his devotees found a way to save us, to make us immune to the needs of the flesh.
His slaves. That is what we are now! Beings of sand and stone, ceaselessly carrying out his commands, including defense of the city. He has cursed us all to an eternal existence without need for food, water, or even breath, but it robbed us of life.
So many around me, tirelessly laboring, or standing as still as stone. Their bodies still exist, but as for their mind, I don't know.
Was that how I was? Am I doomed to return to that state, again?

Throughout the history of the High Scale it was common for the knights to practice complete celibacy. It wasn't until the controversial Kirn was given the hallowed title that contact between the sexes became tolerated. While Kirn wasn't the mightiest of the High Scales he was able to achieve many great victories in the name of our Lord of Fear. One being the battle known as the Bone Rending when Kirn lost his fabled whip, Thriaxis' Tail, and was still able to defeat scores of his enemies using his hands only. Before this battle many believed Kirn could not fulfill his duties as a leader and patriot for the people.
However Kirn's might and his lecture on the use of females in religious crusade and duty convinced the public that celibacy had its place in divinity but non-celibacy also had a place and value within the church. A shrine depicting Kirn among many women was constructed in remembrance of his controversial reign although his corpse was never brought back for burial as it was lost far across the ocean among distant brothers in faith.

When the Trickster returned to his desert city, he used dark arts to imprison and cruelly abuse several djinn. The Master pursued him, bringing his entire citadel into Mudeef's world to keep watch and bring home the kidnapped innocents; innocents whom Mudeef tortures to this very day.
In the long ago, when travel between the Planes was common, Mudeef the Vizier made the point of visiting other realms to form alliances and friendships that would benefit his people. As calamities began to fall upon other areas, Mudeef begged his friends to consider moving to Maj'Dul with its sturdy walls.
Though many thanked Mudeef for his generosity, the Djinn Master seethed when he learned that many djinn were foresaking his fiefdom for the more relaxed lifestyle in Maj'Dul. The Djinn Master sent spies to the Vizier, cloaked as gifts of silver, crystal and gold, in order to keep watch over Mudeef. This faithless "friend" planned to wrest control of the city from Mudeef.
In the long ago, a poor beggar wandered the desert. His robes were tattered and torn and he was near death from thirst. A djinna from the Plane of Sky encountered the beggar and took pity upon him, bringing him with her to the Shimmering Citadel. As he recovered his strength, he told marvelous tales of how he, Mudeef, had been the ruler of a city of humans, but had been deposed through trickery and deceit.

Neh'Ashiir's disappearance will always be cloaked in mystery. We of Torsis have a saying that goes "Neh's chances." We all know this is used to define an innumerable variable but not many know of its relation to the event in the early years of our fair city.
For as many people as there were in Torsis there were that many theories regarding Neh'Ashiir's disappearance. Others say there were political tensions between the queen and her lord, so much so that she had to leave to escape death. And for good measure a few pointed to the stars and said that people from beyond the sky took her.
One thing all agreed upon however is that the relationship between the royal couple was decaying. Political scrutinizers noted small personal habits between the two that implied a separation of intimacy during their public appearances. Many even tie the highly publicized Crusade of Kirn into the disappearance of Neh as Kirn left the city only a few weeks before.
It is recorded in many texts that the visage of Rak'Ashiir reflected his despair over his wife's vanishing although it is a well-known fact that it was mostly an act played by the King to keep up his illusion of nobility. Perhaps one day we will find the truth but at this point it would mean little to the public.

I'd hoped being posted near you this time around would help us reconnect, but fate intervened. Alghoza - I love you more than words can say and know that you have a bright future ahead of you. While I have landed in no small amount of difficulty, I think I have found a way for us to be together.
I was attacked by a werewolf when I was almost to my destination, and a fell curse was laid upon me. I hired a local crone to cure me of my affliction, but the best that she could do, or so she says, was to create a potion that would allow another to run around the nearby area unmolested while in werewolf form. I have a single dose of the potion and am chasing down the local ingredients to make more. I hope that this will allow the two of you two to safely visit me even when or if I turn furry. I was attacked by a werewolf when I was almost to my destination, and a fell curse was laid upon me. I hired a local crone to cure me of my affliction, but the best that she could do, or so she says, was to create a potion that would allow another to run around the nearby area unmolested while in werewolf form. I have a single dose of the potion and am chasing down the local ingredients to make more. I hope that this will allow the two of you two to safely visit me even when or if I turn furry. It's something that all sarnak are imprinted with. Living in Gorowyn, with the social structures and regimented schedules in place, we never need to think of it. Out here, away from the institutions that have shaped us, it is easy to forget what makes us strong
We are not like the other races that populate this world with their stories of divine creation. We have been engineered over centuries. Emperor Atrebe created the first sarnak by fusing the strength and cunning of dragon and iksar to be the shock troops of the Sebilisian Empire.
These sarnak were not us, but eventually become the Di'Zok who lead a slave war against the iksar and carved out an empire of their own.
The Di'Zok Empire came under attack by the forces of their creator's grandfather, the Lich, Venril Sathir. The Di'Zok Empire was hard pressed and growing desperate. They discovered the secrets of their own creation and began to experiment on themselves. Finally, they achieved the perfect combination of elements to create the most powerful race of warriors ever to stride the surface of Norrath. All their previous designs were destroyed and the perfected design was sent into full production.
But the Di'Zok underestimated their ability to control their creation. Their slaves rebelled, destroyed the facility that created them and this race of perfected sarnak were lost.
Lost, that is, until Spiroc scavengers, picking at the ruins of iksar and Di'Zok structures found the process that created the sarnak. They also found the Di'Zok's perfected template and used both of these to create slaves for their own labor. The spiroc repeated the same mistakes as every other race that has made when dealing with the sarnak. They underestimated us and this time, when the evitable revolt occurred, we gained our freedom.
We have been perfected over centures. Refined from the base elements of dragons and iksar into what we are now.
Warriors.
Soldiers without equal.
The Sarnak Code of Honor:
Discipline: Survival must be earned. A warrior that can not fight has no value. A warrior does not refuse a challenge. A warrior does not surrender.
Order:
Avenge the wronged. A warrior does not postpone a matter of honor. If a warrior ignores duty, ac. dishonorably, or is disloyal, he is nothing. Lost honor can only be regained by death.
Authority:
Show respect to authority. Loyalty to Gorowyn, honor, and the Code. For one mission, there is one leader; the chain-of-command is paramount. In battle, a leader's orders may never be questioned.
